SEMBANARKOVIL RAMASWAMY PILLAI (1880 – 1923)

The word ‘Rakthimelam’ brings our memory back to the golden days of the Sembanarkovil. Sembanarkovil Ramaswamy Pillai, born in 1880, was the son of the legendary Nadaswara Vidwan Pahlavi Vaidyanatha Pillai. He first learned the divine art form of Nadaswara under the tutelage of his father and Guru Sri Pahlavi Vaidyanatha Pillai and later from Guru Sri Kottai Subbraya Pillai.

It did not take him a long period of time before he mastered this intricate art form and before he knew it he was already seated in the plane of name and fame. He was well recognized in the circle of many of his yesteryear artists, his contemporaries, the next generation artists and even music lovers. He was also known with fame and respect by many of the Samasthanas and Aadheenams.

Nachiarkovil Sakthivel Pillai, Ammachathiram Kannuswamy Pillai, Needamangalam Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai was Tavil exponents who accompanied him in many occasions. Sri Ramaswamy Pillai was the first Nadaswaram artist to cut a 78 RPM gramophone record with the Columbia Records Company. After introducing his sons to this world with great artistry he passed away with a respected name fame and noble satisfaction in the year 1923.
